What is the museum?
Enter the opal museum from the back of our jewellery store. The museum showcases how opal forms underground, how we mine it and how it is polished into jewellery stones.
The museum also has a range of opalised fossils on show, including an extremely rare opalised dinosaur bone.
Feel free to sit and watch videos on Justin's story and mining in Coober Pedy.
Is it free to enter the museum?
Yes! Our opal museum is located at the back of our retail store and is completely free to browse through.
Can I purchase an item I saw in store online?
Due to the unique nature of opal and its perception depending on lighting conditions, we have chosen to keep individual pieces off our store. However, please feel free to contact us and we can help arrange purchase and delivery of the piece you saw.
Do you offer repairs?
Yes, we offer repairs for jewelry purchased exclusively from our shop, Outback Opals. To begin the repair process, we kindly ask that you bring the item into our store. Once we assess the item, we will provide an estimate for the cost of the repairs and inform you of the expected wait time for completion.
If you're located interstate or internationally, please feel free to email us with details of your item, and we can guide you through the repair process remotely.
How do I care for my opal jewellery?
Opals are a unique product that requires unique care. Opal jewellery should not be treated in the same way you would treat other jewellery such as diamonds.
See our care guide for full details.
CLEANING SOLID OPAL: Clean solid opals gently with mild detergent, warm water and a cloth. Never allow anyone to clean your opal in an ultrasonic cleaner; it can cause the opal to crack.
CLEANING DOUBLETS and TRIPLETS: Should never be soaked or immersed. Avoid bleach, chemicals, cleaners, and ultrasonic cleaners.
HARDNESS: Take special care (especially with rings) not to knock your opal stone, as it may break. Do not wear your precious opal jewellery when doing tasks that may put pressure on your jewellery or result in accidental damages. eg gardening, going to the gym, playing sport, renovating.
WATER:
SOLID OPAL: Solid opal stones can tolerate exposure to water. In fact its not uncommon to keep investment opal in a jar of water.
DOUBLETS & TRIPLETS: The adhesive glue can be affected by water. Do not shower or swim wearing your doublet or triplet jewellery. It is not recommended to submerge your opal into hot water such as hot tubs or baths.
TEMPERATURE:
SOLID OPAL: Sudden changes in extreme temperatures, such as saunas or hot tubs, can cause the stone to crack.
DOUBLETS & TRIPLETS: Heat can affect the adhesive glue in doublet or triplet designs. Avoid using hair dryers while wearing doublet or triplet earrings.
STORING INVESTMENT OPAL: To store investment opal for extended periods, it is recommended to seal it in a plastic bag with a few drops of water on cotton wool to prevent dehydration and fractures.
How do I care for my opal specimen?
Avoid Heat & Sudden Temperature Changes: Store your opal in a soft pouch or box when not in use to avoid scratches or chips.
Handle with care: Use a soft cloth or a mild soap and water solution to clean. Avoid harsh chemicals or ultrasonic cleaners.
Clean gently: Opals contain water, so avoid dry conditions that can cause cracking.
With proper care, your opal specimen will remain beautiful for years.
Can you assess my opal?
While Justin is a qualified opal assessor, he is often away mining and may not always be in-store. However, our knowledgeable staff are trained to recognize the key differences in opal types and can provide you with a rough guide to your opal’s characteristics. Please note that for an accurate assessment, we recommend scheduling a time for Justin to examine your piece in person.
If you have an opal that you'd like assessed, please take clear photos and a video of the piece, and email them to us at info@hahndorfopals.com.au. We will be happy to answer any questions and arrange a suitable time for Justin to assess your opal in-store.
Will you purchase my collection of rough opals / stones?
While we primarily mine for our own opals and don’t actively seek to buy rough stones, we’ll never say no outright. If you believe you have a particularly special piece—such as a high-quality opal or a unique fossil—we’re happy to take a look.
Please email clear photos and videos of the item to info@hahndorfopals.com.au. If it’s something we’re interested in, we’ll get in touch to arrange a time to view the piece in person.
